Coronary artery surgery (Between open heart and beating heart)
Coronary artery surgery
(Between open heart and beating heart)
Coronary artery surgery is one of the treatment methods for patients with coronary artery stenosis who do not respond to drug therapy or catheterization and stents, such as cases of multiple and branched stenosis in the coronary arteries or stenosis of the left main coronary artery or the presence of stenosis accompanied by severe regurgitation in one of the heart valves.
The idea of the traditional operation is based on performing open heart surgery using an artificial heart and lung machine, where the heart muscle is temporarily stopped and arterial connections are made to ensure the delivery of blood and oxygen to areas of the heart muscle that suffer from insufficiency in the arteries that feed it.
Performing coronary artery surgery in this way (open heart method) is the most widely applied and widespread in the world since the emergence of heart surgery in the fifties of the last century and represents more than ninety percent of coronary artery surgeries currently performed worldwide, and the success rate of this type of operation in normal cases exceeds ninety-eight percent.
As for coronary artery surgery using the beating heart technique, it was established more than a quarter of a century ago and it depends on performing arterial connections without stopping the heart muscle and without using the artificial heart and lung machine.
The results of this technique have been evaluated globally on thousands of patients for more than twenty years and have not proven superior to the traditional method known globally since ancient times.
There are also other methods for coronary artery surgery using a small side opening in the chest or using an endoscope or even using a surgical robot... All of these methods have not been widely used and widespread worldwide and their application is still limited.
Finally... The patient who is about to undergo heart surgery should leave it to his doctor to choose the method he is proficient in and which he deems appropriate for his condition... due to the difference in experience and training from one doctor to another... The most important thing is to look at the results of the operation in the short and long term...
